Sir Stuart Etherington

Sir Stuart has been chief executive of NCVO since 1994. He was previously chief executive of RNID (now called Action on Hearing Loss). He is a former chair of the BBC’s charity appeals advisory committee and is an honorary visiting professor at City University London and South Bank University.

His specialist knowledge and interests include:

  • the UK charity sector – its history and role
  • charities delivering public services
  • European and international civil society organisations and movements
  • new funding models such as social investment
  • charity law and regulation.

Dr Karl Wilding

Karl is NCVO’s director of public policy. He has been at NCVO since 1997 and oversees our policy, research, parliamentary and media work.

His specialist knowledge and interests include:

  • public donations to charities, charity fundraising, philanthropy
  • technological innovation for campaigning and fundraising
  • charity finances, accounting and data
  • the relative roles of charities and the state, the future of charities
  • Brexit and its implications for the voluntary sector.

Elizabeth Chamberlain

Elizabeth heads NCVO's work on policy and public services. She first joined NCVO's policy team in 2008 as the expert on charity law and regulation. Her policy interests also include charity campaigning, and the sector’s independence, transparency, and accountability. Before joining NCVO, Elizabeth lived in Brussels where she worked for the European Commission, and for the secretariat of a European network of human rights organisations.

  • charity law and regulation
  • Brexit and its implications for the voluntary sector
  • the Charity Commission
  • fundraising
  • campaigning.

Kristen Stephenson

Kristen is NCVO’s volunteering development manager. She manages NCVO’s volunteering development unit which leads on NCVO’s work on volunteering policy and practice.

Kristen joined NCVO in 2013 and was previously a business development manager for Age UK West Cumbria, with lead management responsibility for volunteering and quality.

Her specialist knowledge and interests include:

  • volunteer management and good practice
  • raising the profile of the volunteer management profession
  • volunteering strategy and trends shaping the future of volunteering
  • volunteering policy.
